RPQ-05 Vulture

This Project was submitted to Parallax by Dirk Van Voris

Original Microsystem Specialties (OMS) is the creator of the RPQ-05 Vulture “Unmanned Tactical Aerial Vehicle.” OMS has recently become the first private company to receive authorization from the FAA to fly in civilian airspace. The intelligence of the vehicle consists of (2) BS2SX modules due to their integrity in severe field conditions and easy reprogrammability.

The RPQ-05 has been flight-tested in the Arizona desert with great success.  Flying at approximately 200 feet, the 52 inch long/8 pound aircraft performs aerial maneuvers similar to a helicopter, but without the high cost, high maintenance, and extra mechanical parts.  The creators had safety and stability in mind when designing this aircraft.

The electronics are specifically designed for the RPQ-05 and utilize commercially available components.  In addition to the two BASIC Stamp® 2sx modules, the electronics consist of a GPS unit with a 3 cm error rate (FAA quality), guidance controls, guidance sensors, altimeter, digital compass, forward facing video camera with a wide view, “real-time” video transmitter, data transceiver, four sonar units, laser sight for target acquisition, and on board battery charging.

The vehicle’s engines are started by an operator on the ground using a remote control. Thereafter, the vehicle is flying, navigating, and landing autonomously.

OMS offers demonstrations open to the public on occasion near Mesa, Arizona.
